First time flying from Newark

Step 4 — How are you getting there?

A private chauffeur removes parking, mode transfers and rental car logistics. It does not remove traffic delays or airport security requirements.

Step 5 — Planning level

What Time Should I Leave for Newark Airport From My City?

There is no single answer, because the drive is only one of seven things that decide it. Your flight time and whether it is domestic or international set the airport arrival buffer. Your terminal and airline decide the check-in cutoff and which security checkpoint you use. Checked bags, PreCheck, CLEAR, children and special assistance all move the number. So does the hour you are on the road — the same trip can differ by half an hour between 5 AM and 5 PM. The calculator above handles all of that together. The sections below give you the driving picture for each origin so the result makes sense.

Travel times below are researched typical ranges for off-peak driving, not live traffic. Allow a wider range during weekday morning and afternoon peak periods.

What Time Should I Leave Edison for Newark Airport?

Edison sits about twenty miles from Newark Liberty, and off-peak the drive typically runs 26 to 35 minutes using the Turnpike or Routes 1 and 9. Weekday mornings are the constraint rather than the distance — the northbound corridor toward the airport builds from around six, and the same trip that takes under half an hour on a Sunday can take considerably longer on a Tuesday at seven.

For a domestic flight, plan to be at the terminal two hours before departure and work backwards from there. An 8 AM domestic departure means being at the terminal around 6 AM, which puts the drive in the worst of the build-up, so leaving around 5:00 to 5:20 is realistic rather than the 5:25 the raw drive time suggests. For an international flight the terminal buffer goes to three hours and the departure moves an hour earlier.

Edison flights split across all three terminals depending on the carrier, so check your terminal before you set the alarm.

What Time Should I Leave Metuchen for Newark Airport?

Metuchen is the closest of the Middlesex County towns we cover, roughly sixteen miles out, with a typical off-peak drive of 22 to 30 minutes. It is one of the few origins where the drive is genuinely short enough that the airport buffer dominates the plan entirely.

For a 7 AM domestic departure, being at the terminal by 5 AM means leaving around 4:15 to 4:30 — early enough that traffic is a non-issue and the whole plan rests on how quickly you clear security. For a mid-morning or afternoon flight the calculus flips, and the weekday peak on the approach roads becomes the variable that matters.

Because the drive is short, Metuchen is an origin where over-buffering is easy. The calculator's Standard setting is usually sufficient here unless you are checking bags or flying internationally.

What Time Should I Leave Woodbridge for Newark Airport?

Woodbridge typically runs 20 to 30 minutes to Newark Liberty off-peak, sitting close to the junction of the Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway and Routes 1 and 9. That convergence is the reason the range widens sharply at peak — three major corridors feeding the same approach means a delay on any one of them affects the trip.

For an early domestic departure the drive is rarely the problem. For anything departing between roughly 7 AM and 9 AM, or between 3 PM and 6 PM, take the upper end of the range and consider the Conservative planning level.

Woodbridge is close enough that the terminal buffer, not the drive, sets your departure time for most morning flights.

What Time Should I Leave Iselin for Newark Airport?

Iselin runs 20 to 30 minutes to the airport off-peak, on much the same corridor as Woodbridge. Its proximity to the Metropark corridor means the local roads feeding the highway can be slower than the highway itself during the weekday commuter window.

For a domestic flight with no checked bag, a two-hour terminal buffer plus a 35-minute allowance for the drive covers most situations. Add the traffic buffer the calculator applies for the hour you would actually be driving rather than assuming the off-peak figure.

Iselin's corporate corridor generates a lot of early-morning business travel, which is exactly when the approach roads are quietest — a 5 AM departure usually runs closer to twenty minutes than thirty.

What Time Should I Leave New Brunswick for Newark Airport?

New Brunswick typically runs 30 to 40 minutes off-peak, using the Turnpike north. The trip is straightforward but long enough that the traffic buffer becomes meaningful rather than cosmetic.

For an 8 AM domestic departure, a 6 AM terminal arrival and a 40-minute allowance puts your departure around 5:10 to 5:25. For an international departure at the same hour, the three-hour buffer moves you to around 4:10 to 4:25, which is before the corridor builds — one of the cases where the earlier flight is easier to plan than a later one.

University travel drives a seasonal pattern here. Move-in and move-out weekends are worth treating as high-buffer days regardless of the hour.

What Time Should I Leave Piscataway for Newark Airport?

Piscataway typically runs 30 to 40 minutes, usually via I-287 to the Turnpike. The I-287 leg is the variable — it carries heavy commuter volume in both directions and an incident there has no convenient alternative.

For planning, treat the upper end of the range as the working figure on any weekday between 6 AM and 9:30 AM. Outside that window the lower end is realistic.

For a domestic flight, that means leaving roughly 2 hours 40 minutes before departure off-peak, and closer to 3 hours during the morning build-up.

What Time Should I Leave East Brunswick for Newark Airport?

East Brunswick typically runs 30 to 45 minutes to Newark Liberty, with the Turnpike carrying most of the trip. The range is wide because the southern Turnpike approach is one of the more congestion-prone stretches in the state during weekday peaks.

For an early-morning domestic flight the drive is usually at the fast end. For anything departing mid-morning onward, plan against the upper end and consider the Conservative setting.

If you are checking bags, note that the bag-drop cutoff, not the security queue, is the hard deadline — United's is 45 minutes before a domestic departure and most carriers are similar.

What Time Should I Leave Old Bridge for Newark Airport?

Old Bridge typically runs 30 to 45 minutes off-peak, on the same Turnpike corridor as East Brunswick but slightly further out. The practical effect is that the peak-hour penalty compounds — a longer stretch on a congested road means more of the trip is exposed.

For a domestic departure, build from the terminal arrival time backwards rather than adding to the drive. Being at the terminal two hours before an 8 AM flight means 6 AM, and a 45-minute allowance on a weekday morning puts departure around 5:05 to 5:20.

Late-evening and overnight departures are considerably faster from here — often closer to half an hour.

What Time Should I Leave Princeton for Newark Airport?

Princeton is about forty miles from Newark Liberty and typically runs 50 to 70 minutes off-peak, either up Route 1 or via the Turnpike. It is the longest of the New Jersey origins we cover and the one where the drive genuinely dominates the plan.

For an 8 AM domestic departure, a 6 AM terminal arrival plus 70 minutes puts you leaving around 4:35 to 4:50. For a 10 AM international departure, the three-hour buffer means a 7 AM terminal arrival, and departing Princeton around 5:30 to 5:50 — which means driving directly into the morning peak. This is a case where the Conservative setting is worth taking seriously.

University and corporate travel from the Route 1 corridor concentrates in the early morning, which is also when the drive is quickest.

What Time Should I Leave Jersey City for Newark Airport?

Jersey City typically runs 20 to 30 minutes to Newark Liberty, usually via the Turnpike extension or Routes 1 and 9. It is one of the shortest trips we cover, but the range understates the variability — the approach roads through the Meadowlands corridor can be slow at unpredictable hours because of freight traffic rather than commuters.

For a domestic flight, the terminal buffer sets your departure time. Being at the terminal by 6 AM for an 8 AM flight means leaving around 5:20 to 5:35.

One note specific to Jersey City: rideshare availability is generally good here, but early-morning surge pricing toward the airport is common, which is often what makes a pre-booked flat rate worth comparing.

What Time Should I Leave Hoboken for Newark Airport?

Hoboken typically runs 25 to 35 minutes, slightly longer than Jersey City because of the local street grid before you reach the highway. That first mile out of Hoboken is frequently the slowest part of the trip.

For an early domestic departure, allow 35 minutes rather than 25 even at a quiet hour — the variability here is in getting out of town, not on the highway.

Being at the terminal two hours before a 7 AM flight means 5 AM, which puts departure around 4:20 to 4:35.

What Time Should I Leave Morristown for Newark Airport?

Morristown typically runs 30 to 45 minutes, generally via I-287 and I-78 or Route 24 toward the Garden State Parkway. The route crosses several commuter corridors, so the peak penalty is real.

For a domestic flight departing at 8 AM, plan on being at the terminal by 6 AM and leaving Morristown around 5:05 to 5:20. Mid-morning and afternoon departures should use the upper end of the range.

Morristown also has its own airport handling private aviation, so if your booking is for a private flight rather than a commercial one, the timing model on this page does not apply — see our private aviation transportation page.

What Time Should I Leave Summit for Newark Airport?

Summit typically runs 30 to 45 minutes to Newark Liberty, with most routings using Route 24 and I-78. The I-78 approach is the constraint during the weekday morning peak.

For a domestic departure, a two-hour terminal buffer plus a 45-minute allowance is the safe weekday figure. Off-peak, 30 to 35 minutes is realistic.

Summit's commuter rail connection means some travellers consider NJ Transit to the airport. Note that this involves a change and the AirTrain connection. The system is being modernised, so the calculator applies a modest allowance for possible temporary disruption when you select NJ Transit.

What Time Should I Leave Short Hills for Newark Airport?

Short Hills typically runs 30 to 45 minutes, on a similar corridor to Summit. The drive is straightforward; the variable is the I-78 and Garden State Parkway interchange during the weekday build-up.

For an 8 AM domestic flight, being at the terminal by 6 AM and allowing 45 minutes puts departure around 5:05 to 5:20. For an international flight at the same time, the three-hour buffer moves it to around 4:05 to 4:20.

Corporate travel from the Millburn and Short Hills corridor concentrates early, which works in your favour — the 4 AM to 5 AM window is close to free-flowing.

What Time Should I Leave Manhattan for Newark Airport?

Manhattan is about sixteen road miles from Newark Liberty but typically runs 30 to 55 minutes, and the spread is almost entirely about the Hudson crossing. The Lincoln Tunnel serves Midtown and points north; the Holland Tunnel is usually better for downtown, TriBeCa and the West Village. Your driver picks on the day based on conditions.

The variability is the point. A 5 AM departure from Midtown can reach the terminal in half an hour. The same trip at 8 AM on a Thursday can take close to an hour, and crosstown travel to reach the tunnel adds time before you have left the island.

For an 8 AM domestic flight, being at the terminal by 6 AM means leaving Manhattan around 4:50 to 5:10. For an international departure, plan an hour earlier. Full route detail is on our Newark Airport to Manhattan page.

What Time Should I Leave Brooklyn for Newark Airport?

Brooklyn typically runs 40 to 70 minutes to Newark Liberty, and the routing matters more here than almost anywhere else. Most trips cross Staten Island via the Verrazzano and Goethals bridges, avoiding Manhattan entirely. Some northern Brooklyn destinations are quicker through the city outside peak hours.

Bay Ridge and Sunset Park sit at the fast end of that range. Williamsburg and Greenpoint are at the slow end, being at the opposite corner of the borough from the crossing.

For an 8 AM domestic departure, a 6 AM terminal arrival and a 70-minute allowance means leaving around 4:35 to 4:50. There is no direct public transit option from Brooklyn to Newark that does not route through Manhattan, which is why most travellers drive or book a car. See Newark Airport to Brooklyn.

What Time Should I Leave Queens for Newark Airport?

Queens typically runs 45 to 75 minutes, one of the longer trips we cover because the borough sits on the far side of the city. There are two viable routes: through the Lincoln Tunnel and across Manhattan, or over the George Washington Bridge and through the Bronx via the Triborough. Northern Queens destinations like Astoria and Flushing are often better served by the second.

Long Island City is the quickest common origin in the borough. Flushing and eastern Queens are the slowest.

For an 8 AM domestic flight, a 6 AM terminal arrival plus 75 minutes puts departure around 4:30 to 4:45. See Newark Airport to Queens for route detail.

What Time Should I Leave Staten Island for Newark Airport?

Staten Island typically runs 25 to 45 minutes to Newark Liberty, usually via the Goethals or Outerbridge crossing. It is geographically the closest of the New York origins, and for the western side of the island the trip is genuinely short.

The range is wide because the bridges are the whole trip. A backup at the crossing has no workaround, and the morning westbound flow toward New Jersey is heavier than people expect.

For a domestic flight, allow 45 minutes on a weekday morning and 25 to 30 off-peak. Being at the terminal by 6 AM for an 8 AM departure means leaving around 5:05 to 5:20 on a weekday.

What Time Should I Leave Long Island for Newark Airport?

Long Island is the longest trip we cover, typically 60 to 120 minutes depending on how far east you start. Western Nassau is at the fast end; Suffolk and the East End are considerably longer, and a summer Friday can push well past the upper figure.

Every route crosses the city before reaching New Jersey, which means the trip is exposed to Manhattan or Bronx traffic on top of the Long Island Expressway.

For an 8 AM domestic departure from western Nassau, a 6 AM terminal arrival and a 90-minute allowance means leaving around 4:15 to 4:30. From Suffolk, closer to 3:30. This is the origin where the High-Buffer planning level earns its keep. See Newark Airport to Long Island.

What Time Should I Leave for a 6 AM, 7 AM or 8 AM Flight From Newark?

Early-morning departures are the most searched and the most misjudged. The drive is at its fastest, which tempts people to leave late, but almost everything else at the airport is at its least forgiving — fewer check-in desks open, fewer security lanes staffed, and rideshare availability at its thinnest. The guidance below assumes a domestic flight with no checked bag. Add an hour for international, and add the check-in cutoff if you are checking luggage.

6 AM flight

Be at the terminal by 4 AM. Roads are effectively free-flowing, so the drive is at the bottom of its range from any origin. The real risks are elsewhere: check-in desks and security lanes may only just be opening, and rideshare supply at 3 AM is genuinely unreliable in the outer suburbs. If you are relying on an app to reach the airport at this hour, have a fallback.

7 AM flight

Be at the terminal by 5 AM. This is the busiest departure hour at Newark and the first of United's morning banks at Terminal C. Security queues build fast from around 4:30. The drive is still quick from most origins, but the terminal is not quiet.

8 AM flight

Be at the terminal by 6 AM. This is the first hour where the drive genuinely competes with the terminal for your attention — the weekday morning build-up starts around six on most approach corridors, so a trip that takes 30 minutes at 5 AM may take 45 at 6. Take the upper end of your origin's range.

9 AM flight

Be at the terminal by 7 AM, which puts the drive squarely in the weekday peak. This is the hour where origin matters most: a Metuchen departure is barely affected, while Princeton, Long Island or Queens can lose half an hour to traffic alone.

10 AM flight

Be at the terminal by 8 AM. The morning peak is at its heaviest on the road, but the terminal has usually cleared the early banks. For most origins the drive, not the airport, is what sets your departure time.

Afternoon flights

Be at the terminal two hours before departure as usual. Midday driving is the easiest window of the weekday, and security is typically at its lightest between the morning and evening banks. If your flight departs after 3 PM, though, the drive runs into the afternoon peak — treat a 5 PM departure with the same caution as an 8 AM one.

Evening flights

Be at the terminal two hours before departure. The evening peak on the roads runs until roughly seven, and Terminal C sees a second United bank in the early evening. A 6 PM departure is one of the harder ones to plan at Newark because both the road and the terminal are busy at once.

Late-night flights

Be at the terminal two hours before departure. Roads are clear and the terminal is quiet, but fewer check-in desks and security lanes are staffed, and Newark has had periodic overnight runway work that can affect punctuality. Check your flight status before you leave.

Newark Airport Departure Time Examples

These are worked examples showing how the calculation comes together. They are illustrations, not promises — your actual result changes with the date, the airline, your terminal, whether you are checking bags, and the conditions on the day.

Edison to Newark, 7:00 AM domestic flight

  • Terminal arrival target: 5:00 AM (two hours before departure)
  • Typical drive: 26 to 35 minutes, at the fast end at this hour
  • Traffic buffer: minimal — roads are clear before 5 AM
  • Inside the terminal: check-in if bags, security, walk to gate — all inside the two-hour window

Recommended departure: 4:15 to 4:30 AM

Metuchen to Newark, 8:00 AM domestic flight

  • Terminal arrival target: 6:00 AM
  • Typical drive: 22 to 30 minutes, with the morning build-up starting
  • Traffic buffer: light but non-zero at 5:30

Recommended departure: 5:15 to 5:30 AM

Princeton to Newark, 10:00 AM international flight

  • Terminal arrival target: 7:00 AM (three hours before an international departure)
  • Typical drive: 50 to 70 minutes, running into the weekday morning peak
  • Traffic buffer: significant — this trip is fully exposed to rush hour
  • Inside the terminal: international check-in with document verification takes longer than domestic

Recommended departure: 5:30 to 5:50 AM

Manhattan to Newark, 9:00 AM domestic flight

  • Terminal arrival target: 7:00 AM
  • Typical drive: 30 to 55 minutes, plus crosstown time before the tunnel
  • Traffic buffer: substantial — 7 AM on a weekday is the worst window for the Hudson crossings

Recommended departure: 5:45 to 6:05 AM

Brooklyn to Newark, 7:30 AM international flight

  • Terminal arrival target: 4:30 AM (three hours before departure)
  • Typical drive: 40 to 70 minutes via Staten Island
  • Traffic buffer: minimal at this hour — the crossings are clear before 5 AM

Recommended departure: 3:15 to 3:35 AM

Jersey City to Newark, 6:30 AM domestic flight

  • Terminal arrival target: 4:30 AM
  • Typical drive: 20 to 30 minutes, free-flowing
  • Traffic buffer: negligible
  • Note: rideshare availability at 4 AM is thin — a pre-booked car removes that risk

Recommended departure: 3:50 to 4:05 AM

How Much Time Should I Allow for Newark Airport Traffic?

The honest answer is that it depends less on distance than on which hour you are on the road. Across the origins on this page, the same trip can differ by thirty to forty percent between a 5 AM departure and an 8 AM one. The calculator applies a multiplier for the hour and day you would actually be driving rather than using a single average.

The weekday morning build-up on the approach corridors starts around six and holds until roughly nine-thirty. The afternoon equivalent runs from about three-thirty to seven. Weekends are lighter but not free — Sunday afternoons in particular carry heavier volume toward the airport than people expect. Holidays are the widest variable of all, and the calculator's High-Buffer setting exists largely for them.

Two structural points worth knowing. Trips from New York cross either a Hudson tunnel or the Staten Island bridges, and both are single points of failure — a backup there has no practical alternative. And trips from central New Jersey converge on the same few approach roads regardless of origin, so an incident near the airport affects Edison, Woodbridge and New Brunswick equally.

How We Calculate Your Departure Time

The calculation runs backwards from your scheduled flight time. We start at departure, subtract the airport arrival buffer, and then show how that buffer gets spent inside the terminal: check-in and bag drop if you are checking luggage, security screening, and the walk from the checkpoint to your gate. That gives the time you should be standing at the terminal. From there we subtract your travel time and a traffic buffer for the time of day you would be on the road, plus an adjustment for how you are getting to the airport.

TSA guidance: minimum two hours before domestic flights, three hours before international. That two-hour and three-hour guidance already includes what happens inside the terminal, so the breakdown you see explains how that time is consumed rather than adding to it. Without that distinction the numbers would be double-counted and you would be sent to the airport far earlier than necessary.

The answer is a range rather than a single time because almost every input is itself a range. Driving times vary with conditions, security queues vary with how many flights push at once, and the walk to your gate depends on which gate you are given. Leaving at the earlier end of the range buys you margin; the later end is the point at which the plan gets tight.

We do not use live TSA wait times. The security figures are typical ranges.

Travel times are researched typical figures, not live traffic.

Research-based estimateThese are typical ranges only. Actual waits vary. Peak windows used: 07:00-09:00, 15:00-18:00.

Research-based estimateTypical off-peak driving times. Not live. Entries marked 'corridor' are estimates derived from route geography and should be treated as wider ranges.

How Early Should You Arrive at Newark?

TSA guidance: minimum two hours before domestic flights, three hours before international.

Domestic flights

Plan to be at the terminal 120 minutes before departure. That window is intended to cover check-in, screening and reaching your gate rather than sitting spare at the end.

If you are checking a bag, the bag-drop cutoff sets a hard floor. United's published cutoff is 45 minutes before a domestic departure. Other airlines differ, so check your airline's published policy — the calculator uses a conservative 45-minute default when the airline is not one we hold a published figure for.

TSA PreCheck and CLEAR shorten the screening portion, not the rest. In the ranges we use, expedited screening runs 5–15 minutes mid-day against 15–30 minutes in the standard lanes, and the gap widens during the peak windows.

International flights

Plan to be at the terminal 180 minutes before departure. Document checks at the counter take longer than a domestic check-in, and most international departures at Newark leave from Terminal B or Terminal C, where the checkpoint you use is tied to your gate.

United's published international check-in cutoff is 60 minutes before departure, and 60 minutes is also the conservative default this calculator applies to other airlines when you are checking a bag.

Families travelling with children, first-time travellers at Newark, and anyone who needs special assistance should take the larger end of the range. Those are the inputs that trigger the neutral High-Buffer note in the form — the extra time goes on the buffer, not on the drive.

Which Terminal Will You Be Departing From?

Newark operates three terminals and they do not work the same way. Terminal A is the newest, with a single departures hall feeding all 33 gates, so once you are screened you can reach any gate without being screened again. Terminal B holds over thirty mostly international carriers across three concourses, and each concourse has its own checkpoint — the one you use is decided by your gate. Terminal C is United's hub and the busiest of the three, with congestion driven by United's morning and evening departure banks.

That matters for your departure time mainly in two ways. At Terminal B, you cannot switch concourses after screening, so arriving at the wrong checkpoint costs real time. At Terminal C, the departure banks mean a 7 AM flight and a 2 PM flight face very different queues. And if you are arriving by NJ Transit, note that the AirTrain does not stop at Terminal A — it is a fifteen-minute covered walk or a five-minute ride on the free shuttle, which runs about every five minutes. Allow roughly twenty minutes from the rail station to Terminal A, against eleven to Terminal B and seven to Terminal C.

How You Get There Changes the Timing

The calculator adjusts for your transport method because each one adds a different kind of time. A private car adds none beyond the drive itself — the chauffeur handles the vehicle and you are dropped at your terminal door. Rideshare adds the wait for a vehicle to reach you. Driving yourself adds parking and the transfer from the lot, and the economy lots take longer than the terminal garages. Returning a rental adds the return process on top of that. NJ Transit adds the rail schedule, the AirTrain connection and the transfer to your terminal — about seven minutes to Terminal C, eleven to Terminal B, and twenty to Terminal A, which is reached by covered walkway or free shuttle rather than by AirTrain directly.

One thing worth knowing regardless of how you travel: parking is not permitted in front of or alongside any terminal at Newark, and unattended vehicles are towed. Curbs are for active pickups and drop-offs only. That rule is why a driver collecting you waits at the free Cell Phone Lot — more than a hundred spaces, less than five minutes from every terminal, next to the P4 garage — and comes to the curb only once you are outside with your bags.

Full details on pickup, drop-off and meeting your driver are in our EWR Terminal Pickup Guide. If you would rather be driven, see our Newark Airport car service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time should I leave for Newark Airport?

It depends on your flight time, your starting point, your terminal and how you are getting there. As a general rule, plan to be at the terminal two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international one, then add your travel time and a traffic buffer on top. The calculator above works out the specific number for your trip.

How early should I arrive at Newark Airport?

TSA advises a minimum of two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international one. That window is meant to cover check-in, security screening and walking to your gate — it is not spare time at the end. Add more if you are checking bags, travelling with children, flying at peak, or unfamiliar with the airport.

How early should I arrive at EWR for a domestic flight?

Two hours before departure as a planning baseline. If you are checking a bag, the bag-drop cutoff is the hard deadline rather than the security queue — United's is 45 minutes before departure and most carriers are similar.

How early should I arrive at EWR for an international flight?

Three hours before departure. Document checks at international check-in take longer than a domestic bag drop, and most international departures at Newark leave from Terminal B or Terminal C, where the checkpoint you use is tied to your gate. United's published international check-in cutoff is 60 minutes.

What time should I leave for a 6 AM flight at Newark?

Be at the terminal by 4 AM. Roads are free-flowing so the drive is at its quickest from any origin, but fewer check-in desks and security lanes are open at that hour, and rideshare availability at 3 AM is unreliable in the outer suburbs. From Metuchen or Edison, leaving around 3:15 to 3:30 is realistic.

What time should I leave for a 7 AM flight?

Be at the terminal by 5 AM. This is the busiest departure hour at Newark and the first of United's morning banks at Terminal C, so security builds quickly from around 4:30. The drive is still quick from most origins.

What time should I leave for an 8 AM flight?

Be at the terminal by 6 AM. This is the first hour where the drive starts to compete with the terminal — the weekday build-up begins around six, so take the upper end of your origin's travel range rather than the off-peak figure.

How much extra time should I allow for Newark Airport traffic?

Across the origins on this page, the same trip can take thirty to forty percent longer during the weekday morning or afternoon peak than it does off-peak. The calculator applies a multiplier for the hour and day you would be driving rather than a single average.

Which terminal does my airline use at Newark?

Use the airline table on this page. Terminal A serves Air Canada, American, Delta, JetBlue and some United flights. Terminal B serves over thirty mostly international carriers plus Alaska, Allegiant, Breeze, Frontier and Sun Country. Terminal C is United's hub. Terminal assignments do change, so confirm with your airline before travelling.

What terminal is United at Newark?

Terminal C, which is United's exclusive hub at Newark for both mainline and United Express. Some United flights operate from Terminal A or Terminal B, and some international arrivals process at Terminal B, so always confirm on your boarding pass.

What terminal is JetBlue at Newark?

Terminal A for both domestic and international departures. JetBlue international arrivals from non-precleared countries process at Terminal B, which matters for pickups rather than departures.

What terminal is Delta at Newark?

Terminal A.

Where do Uber and Lyft pick up at Newark?

Terminal A pickup is on the arrivals level directly across the street from the terminal. Terminal B pickup is on the arrivals level at the terminal frontage. Terminal C pickup has moved into the Terminal C Garage on Floor 3, reached by following Arrivals signage to Terminal C Parking across the pedestrian bridge.

Where should a private car drop me off?

At the departures curb for your terminal, the same as any other vehicle. Curbside drop-off is permitted for active loading and unloading. Tell your driver your terminal letter when you book — saying only "Newark Airport" is the most common cause of a confused drop-off.

Can someone wait at the curb at Newark Airport?

No. Parking is not permitted in front of or alongside any terminal, and unattended vehicles are towed at the owner's expense. A driver can only come to the curb once you and your bags are already outside. Until then they wait at the free Cell Phone Lot, which has more than a hundred spaces and sits less than five minutes from every terminal next to the P4 garage.

Is the AirTrain running at Newark?

Yes. The AirTrain runs between terminals free of charge and connects to NJ Transit and Amtrak at the Newark Liberty rail station. The system is being modernised, and the airport advises that temporary service disruptions can occur during construction, with shuttle buses provided whenever service is unavailable. There is no scheduled suspension published at present, but it is worth checking the airport's advisories page before you travel.

Does the AirTrain go to Terminal A?

Not directly. Terminal A is reached from the AirTrain station by a fifteen-minute covered walkway or a five-minute ride on the free shuttle, which runs roughly every five minutes and has a live tracker. Allow about twenty minutes in total from the rail station to Terminal A. The calculator includes this automatically when you select NJ Transit.

How long does the AirTrain take?

Under twenty minutes between terminals, and it is free. From the rail station the journey is about seven minutes to Terminal C, eleven to Terminal B and twenty to Terminal A. Connecting to or from the rail station carries an $8.75 access fee, payable by contactless card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, the NJ Transit app or a ticket machine. Between 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM the AirTrain serves Terminals B and C every fifteen minutes with a shuttle to Terminal A.

How long does security take at Newark Airport?

It varies with the hour and the terminal, and we do not publish a single figure because no reliable live feed exists. The ranges the calculator uses are 5 to 15 minutes in expedited lanes and 15 to 30 minutes in standard lanes at mid-day, widening to 10 to 20 and 30 to 45 during the peak windows of 7 to 9 AM and 3 to 6 PM. Terminal C surges during United's departure banks.

Does TSA PreCheck change how early I should arrive?

It shortens the screening portion, not the rest. Check-in, bag drop and the walk to your gate are unchanged. PreCheck typically saves ten to twenty minutes at peak and less off-peak, which is meaningful but not enough to justify cutting your arrival buffer below the two-hour and three-hour baselines.

Does CLEAR change how early I should arrive?

CLEAR moves you through identity verification faster but you still go through physical screening. Like PreCheck, it affects one segment of the process rather than the overall arrival target. The calculator treats CLEAR and PreCheck the same way.

What if I am travelling with children?

Take the upper end of every range. Children slow down security screening, bathroom stops happen at inconvenient moments, and boarding with a family usually means being at the gate earlier rather than later. The calculator flags the High-Buffer planning level when you select this, and the extra time goes on the airport buffer rather than the drive.

What if I have checked luggage?

The bag-drop cutoff becomes your hard deadline. United's is 45 minutes before a domestic departure and 60 before an international one; other airlines differ and the calculator applies a conservative 45 or 60 minute default where we do not hold a published figure. Missing the cutoff means missing the flight even if security would have been quick.

What time should I leave Edison for Newark Airport?

The drive typically runs 26 to 35 minutes off-peak. For an 8 AM domestic flight, being at the terminal by 6 AM means leaving around 5:00 to 5:20 on a weekday, since the morning build-up starts around six. For an international flight at the same hour, leave about an hour earlier.

What time should I leave Manhattan for Newark Airport?

The drive typically runs 30 to 55 minutes depending on the Hudson crossing and the hour, plus crosstown time before the tunnel. For an 8 AM domestic flight, being at the terminal by 6 AM means leaving around 4:50 to 5:10. At 8 AM on a weekday the same trip can take close to an hour.

What time should I leave Brooklyn for Newark Airport?

The drive typically runs 40 to 70 minutes, usually crossing Staten Island via the Verrazzano and Goethals bridges. Bay Ridge is at the fast end, Williamsburg and Greenpoint at the slow end. For an 8 AM domestic flight, leave around 4:35 to 4:50.

What time should I leave Princeton for Newark Airport?

The drive typically runs 50 to 70 minutes. For an 8 AM domestic flight, being at the terminal by 6 AM means leaving around 4:35 to 4:50. For a 10 AM international flight, leaving around 5:30 to 5:50 — which drives straight into the morning peak, so the Conservative setting is worth considering.

Does the calculator use live traffic?

No. Travel times are researched typical figures for off-peak driving, with a multiplier applied for the hour and day you would be on the road. We would rather tell you that than imply a precision we do not have.

Does the calculator use live TSA wait times?

No, and no reliable public feed exists for them. The security figures are researched typical ranges, clearly labelled in the breakdown. Anyone claiming live TSA wait times for Newark is not using an official source.

Can I book a car to Newark Airport through this site?

Yes. Once you have your departure time, you can request a quote or book online. We track your flight, quote a flat rate before you book, and drop you at your terminal. Tolls and parking are billed at cost.

Sources and Methodology

Airport arrival recommendations follow TSA's published guidance of a two-hour minimum for domestic departures and three hours for international. Check-in cutoffs come from the airlines' own published policies; where we do not hold a published figure for a carrier, the calculator applies a conservative default rather than guessing.

Terminal assignments, AirTrain status, rideshare pickup locations, the Cell Phone Lot and curbside rules all come from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the official Newark Liberty International Airport site. Each of those facts carries a verification date in our data, shown beside the relevant section.

Travel times are researched typical ranges for off-peak driving rather than live traffic, and the traffic multipliers are planning assumptions derived from known weekday peak patterns. Security ranges are researched typical figures. Neither is live data, and both are labelled as estimates wherever they appear.

Time-sensitive items — AirTrain modernisation work and overnight runway work — are reviewed monthly. Terminal, airline and rideshare pickup information is reviewed quarterly. If something on this page contradicts what your airline or the airport tells you, believe them and let us know.
